Qt and C++ based ‘OncoStudio 2.0’ achieves real-time visualization of high-resolution 3D medical images. Achieves 2x increase in development productivity and a 20% reduction in UI-related bugs

Qt Group (www.qt.io), a global software development platform company, announced that it has supported the platform enhancement for the AI-based auto-contouring software of medical AI startup Oncosoft. Through this collaboration, Oncosoft successfully developed ‘OncoStudio 2.0,’ a contouring software capable of real-time visualization of high-resolution 3D medical images.

Oncosoft, a company that develops image analysis software for radiation cancer therapy, currently supplies its solutions to over 60 hospitals and research institutions both domestically and internationally. ‘OncoStudio’ is an AI solution that supports automatic contouring of medical images, the first step in radiation therapy planning, and is regarded as a professional solution that integrates high-speed rendering, multiple interactions, and user-defined functions.

While ‘OncoStudio 1.0’ was based on Python and PyQt, version 2.0 adopted C++ and Qt to overcome performance limitations and secure a real-time control environment. After comparing various frameworks, Qt was ultimately chosen for its strengths in compatibility with image processing libraries, stability based on multi-threading, and its signal-slot architecture. Currently, OncoStudio 2.0 is developed as a Qt-based CMake project, flexibly handling not only high-resolution image processing but also multi-language support, responsive UI, and customization for each hospital.

Since adopting Qt, Oncosoft's software development environment has seen achievements such as a 2x improvement in UI implementation speed, a 20% reduction in UI-related bugs, and a 25% improvement in feature response time. Furthermore, hiring talent with Qt experience has contributed to strengthening the development team's capabilities.

Seong-gong Moon, Head of Product Development at Oncosoft, said, "The biggest challenge was to process complex medical images in real-time while implementing an intuitive UI." He added, "Qt is not just a UI toolkit but a powerful platform that offers excellent compatibility with various operating systems and key open-source libraries." He continued, "For a startup, the scalability and maintainability of the developed product are crucial from a long-term perspective, and in that regard, Qt was the best choice."

Jong-chil Kim, Director of Qt Group Korea, commented, "High-performance rendering and system stability are key in medical imaging diagnosis and treatment support systems." He assessed, "Oncosoft's case is a great example of how Qt can support both real-time performance and scalability in the medical field." He added, "Qt will continue to actively support the sustainable technology development of domestic and international medical device and healthcare software development companies."

Meanwhile, Oncosoft is developing solutions based on OncoStudio that cover the entire process of treatment planning, analysis, report generation, and treatment, ultimately aiming to build an all-in-one radiation therapy platform. Currently, features such as interfacing with external beam radiation therapy planning systems (TPS) and supporting radiopharmaceutical therapy are being implemented based on Qt. The company is also actively adopting quality management tools like Axivion, Squish, and Coco to enhance stability and test coverage.

The collaboration between Qt Group and Oncosoft is a model case in the medical imaging software field, demonstrating high performance, scalability, and maintenance efficiency, and is expected to have a positive impact on the future development of medical AI and data fusion technology.
